RANDY BROOKSHIER
My name is Randy Brookshier and I live in Southwest Virginia. Archery and bowhunting have been a big part of my life for almost 60 years now as I grew up shooting and hunting with my dad.
I shot throughout my teen years and ended up competing for my college archery team, traveling around the country shooting Olympic style archery. After college I went to work at my local police department where I worked for 31 years. After a short break I took another job in law enforcement and will have 40 years in law enforcement when I retire for good in 2023.
I joined the P.B.S. in 1981 and became a regular member in 1991. The Professional Bowhunters Society has been a big part of my bowhunting life throughout the years, helping to mold me into the bowhunter I have become. Spending the years reading articles from the likes of the Wensel brothers, G. Fred Asbell, Monty Browning, and then actually getting to meet and interact with these gentlemen at a P.B.S. banquet or other function have been integral in my development as a bowhunter.
I am fortunate to live in an area with very liberal deer seasons along with a high deer density. I can start bowhunting in September and hunt through February. In most of the counties that I hunt I can shoot two deer a day, seven days a week during season and am allowed to purchase unlimited bonus anterless tags. So, I end up hunting a lot. Working shift work for most of my career has allowed me to hunt almost every day during season. Virginia also has good populations of bear, turkeys and small game, plus some outstanding bow fishing. I have also been fortunate to be able to bow hunt 17 different states and several Canadian Provinces. Consequently, I tend to have a bow in hand pretty much year-round. Over the years I shot a few deer with firearms in Virginia but I have never hunted with a fire arm on any of my out of state hunts. I have always bow hunted, and have carried longbows and recurves exclusively since 1989.
I am married to a wife who is incredibly supportive of my passion for archery and bowhunting and have two sons and a daughter. They are all adults now and were all raised shooting bows with me and bowhunting.
I am involved in several archery clubs and organizations here in Virginia and really enjoy putting on various shoots, from aerial shoots to field rounds. I especially enjoy getting new people involved in traditional archery, watching them develop into accomplished archers and enjoying the sport I love.
